Music/Eatin'/Travelin': Gruene Hall - Oldest Dance Hall in Texas
Gruene, Texas (pronounced Green) is forty miles south of Austin and home to Gruene Hall, a bar and dance hall. It was built in the 1880’s and became the social center for the community. It still stands at the end of Hunter Road and the intersection of Gruene Road. It's the oldest dance hall in Texas and countless country music stars and legends have performed there over the years including Willie Nelson, George Strait, Jerry Jeff Walker & Lyle Lovett. If you can get there, Alseep At The Wheel is playin' this New Year's Eve.

Right around back is the Gristmill River Restaurant (go with the chicken fried steak.) It rests high up on the bank of the Guadalupe river. I spent a lot of time runnin' around there and tubin' down that river as a kid and the town hasn't changed a whole lot since then. Which is nice. If you venture that way make sure you stop by The Lone Star Float House. Tell 'em Rooster sent ya. That and a quarter oughta getcha a cup of coffee.
